State police said they were called about a domestic incident at a house on Durham Street in Riegelsville around 6:30 p.m. A 30-year-old woman and a 34-year-old man were involved, they wrote in a release.

Troopers searched nearby and found the woman with three children on a walking trail near the Delaware River, but when they approached, police said she leaped into the water.

The three kids were "safely secure(d)," they added.

Troopers, the Riegelsville Fire Department, and the Plumsted Fire Water Rescue Team said they tried to rescue her but were unable to bring her back to shore. The search lasted for two hours before it was called off, according to the release.

The 34-year-old man arrived back on scene during the search and was taken into custody on a warrant, they added. His name was not reported.

The investigation is ongoing as of Tuesday, Jan. 16.
